Recovering from your Jiu Jitsu Injury

Posted by on

One of the most difficult, and almost inevitable, experiences in jiu-jitsu is injury. To make matters even worse, many people get into a vicious cycle that follows something like this:

  1. Get hurt
  2. Stop training completely
  3. Come back ready to go hardcore
  4. Get re-injured
  5. Repeat.
Sitting out of training is often even more difficult mentally than getting smashed on the mat. Everyday becomes a mental battle. “Should I go train today?", "Don’t be a pussy just do it!","But, I don’t want to get hurt worse and be out even longer.” This is type of mental gymnastics is exhausting.

The best way to break this cycle is with a good gameplan. Pick a day to come back, and don’t do any rolling before that date. This way you don’t have to fight that daily mental battle with yourself trying to decide whether to tough it out and go roll, or stay home and heal.

Grapple.Ninja can help you with this. Go ahead and log your rest days. If you aren’t getting proper rest and recovery you aren’t getting the most out of your time on the mat. If you are injured to the point you need to do physical therapy, go ahead and log your PT time. Therapy counts as training too and as silly as it sounds sometimes those little stretches are even harder than escaping mount. Additionally, If you you keep getting sick or injured every couple months, you might be over-training. You can use your Grapple.Ninja data to help recognize these issues before they become a major problem.

When you are stuck in the injury doldrums, having a plan and being able to see a graph showing your work gives a huge mental boost. Don’t just sit at home feeling sorry for yourself. Set a plan and execute.
